Arte Karambolage – Explainer

2024 | 3:34 min | UHD | 2D Drawn Animation

For the Arte program Karambolage, this explainer video focused on the iconic East German Ampelmann (the traffic lights man). As an animation studio, we had the exciting task of developing a visual narrative arc that captures the fascination of this small yet significant symbol of public space.

We set out to explore what makes the Ampelmann’s history so unique—from its first appearance as part of the GDR’s traffic system to its current status as a national cultural icon. The film highlights the origins of the Ampelmann, introduced in the 1960s as part of a modern traffic safety concept in the GDR, and traces its evolution from German reunification to the present day. More than just a traffic signal, the Ampelmann is portrayed as a symbol of East Germany, transformation, and the fusion of tradition and modernity.
